It's not hard to find a gorgeous calendar these days, but this one by Beverly Hsu really stands out with its abstract minimalism. This letterpress wall calendar uses 12 different decorative type pieces to represent each month. It's super-clean and really elegant—a great gift, or addition to your office. [via swissmiss] |DBK

The Right Medicine

I have no idea what I would use these for, but I want them all. Three Potato Four is selling these antique medicine bottles in sets of three, chock-full of 1900s typography and design. Hmmm... they would make great vases, wouldn't they? |DBK

The Map as Art

The kind folks at Princeton Architectural Press sent me a copy of The Map as Art, a collection of maps by a variety of artists, both well-known and less-known by Katharine Harmon. According to their write-up, "In an era of globalized politics, culture, and ecology, contemporary artists are drawn to maps to express their visions." Some of these maps are just exquisite in their detail and form. And some will make you look twice. |DBK

The Urban Forest Project — Call for Entries

This is an Open Call for you to plant and participate in The Urban Forest Project! If you are a Washington, DC metropolitan designer or artist you are invited to take part in this exciting education and environmental initiative.
This spring, The Urban Forest Project, a global public arts and environmental initiative, will plant 100 street banners designed by local designers and students in the downtown Washington, DC area. Each banner will use the form of, or metaphor for, a tree to make powerful visual statements about the environment. Together they'll create a forest of thoughtful images in the heart of the nation's capitol. Once the banners come down from the light poles, the artwork will be repurposed into tote bags for purchase. Proceeds from the sales of the tote bags will go to non-profit environmental efforts that will aid Washington, DC in being a cleaner, greener and more sustainable city.
Interested and ready to begin? Visit www.aigadc.org or www.ufp-dc.com to learn more. But hurry, submissions are due December 18, 2009. |DBK

Tis the Season

These gorgeous gift wrap papers caught my eye this morning on Felt & Wire. Designed by Loop, an eco-conscious stationery and textile brand based in Philadelphia, this paper hits all the right notes—simple, modern, organic, and hand-drawn. What a great way to jump-start all that wrapping this season. |DBK
